Introduction

In 2016, when I was sitting in prison, I was reading an article about IMSI-catcher (international mobile subscriber identity-catcher), particularly about a device named Stingray on Bloomberg magazine, Stingray has also become a generic name to describe these kinds of devices. Those days, I was scrambling around to get more information and I have written a few pages in my journal about the problems with privacy concerns for people and now it is kind of a coincidence which it means for me to write an article to raise cybersecurity awareness toward regular people who have limitations of cybersecurity knowledge.

Basically, IMSI-catcher is a device that can intercept your texts, calls, track location and data session hijacking. Does it sound scary right? Yes, it prompts us to fear about being a target of a hacker, a cybercriminal, or a spy group. I believe it is going to be scarier than before since everything is getting more connected — the Internet of Things (IoTs) era is here and stays here. Especially the new 5G network is going to be the “new normal” anytime soon and you must learn that 4G/5G networks could be vulnerable to exploitation due to ‘mishmash’ of old technologies.
